Yu Zhang is a writer and artist, Chinese-born, based in LA, who excels in writing, filmmaking, and art. Her works explore the existential loneliness of individuals and the importance of one's awareness of death in the search for an authentic self that transcends desires and breaks free from social systems and conventional norms. She tells stories from a female perspective, excavating the relationship between the physical and the spiritual in emotions and the limitations and unpredictability of emotions, thus highlighting the importance of female spiritual independence. She uses a poignant romanticism to express her thoughts, capturing her feelings and the world around her.
Writing has been a powerful medium for Yu Zhang to express her creativity, and she has honed her skills through certification by the Writers Guild of Americal Writers training at Writers Boot Camp. Her literary prowess has been showcased by publishing multiple prose works in renowned literary magazines in China, and has deeply resonated with and provoked reflection from readers. Additionally, her abilities as a screenwriter have shone through in her contributions to film projects, lending a unique voice to the narratives she helps shape.
Alongside her writing prowess, she also occupies a position in other roles within the film industry. She holds a Master's degree as a producer and has produced films “Interface,” “Lipstick,” and many others, and she worked on the AFI films “Love Dust,” “Crab Dance,” “Dumplings & Tortellini,” and several others. In addition, her experience in directing and acting always helps her develop an appreciation for the artistic side of productions. Once participated in the stage plays “Leftover Girl” and “Secret Love in Peach Blossom Land.” The starring short film “Breaking Dawn” won an award at the Asian World Film Festival, Rochester International Film Festival Honorable Mention, screed at the Kansas City Film Festival, and Julien Dubuque International Film Festival. Her short film “Someone in Time” has been screened in numerous international film festivals, including Flickers' Rhode Island International Film Festival, The Poppy Jasper International Film Festival, the Chinese American Film Festival, and many others. Her short documentary “Art Beyond Survival” has been selected for the LA Documentary Film Festival. In addition, her art film, “The Cure,” was chosen for the LA Shorts International Film Festival, the finalist at the USA Film Festival, and a Semi-Finalist at Flickers’ Rhode Island International Film Festival.
Further showcasing her creative vision. Her oil paintings employ the form of classical Impressionism and describe melancholic personal existentialism of femininity. Her work exhibitions include "Going Forward in the Light" in the 2022 Chinese Contemporary Art Exhibition. Her participation in The 2nd Chinese and Foreign Artists Fine Arts, Calligraphy, and Art Exhibition earned her an exceptional award and second prize.
